History of Hindi Cinema

Hindi film world began its journey in 1913 through the country’s first Silent movie Raja Harishchandra.A 43-year-old architect, Dhundiraj Govind Phalke made the 3,700-feet feature film to become the father of Indian Cinema.Raja Harishchandra is a mythical character, recounted in the great Indian epics the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, who sacrificed his kingdom, family and himself to keep his promise.
The 1870-born Phalke, who was an architecht, painter, photographer, magician and a film buff, made the movie on being committed to become a filmmaker after watching a film The Life of Christ in Bombay (now Mumbai) in 1910.
After his first successful venture, Phalke made Mohini Bhasmasur (1913),Satyavan Savitri(1914), Lanka Dahan (1917), Shri Krishna Janam (1918), Kaliya Madan (1919) and Setu Bandhan(1931).Besides Phalke, many other filmmakers produced silent movies in Hindi and other regional languages, especially in Bengali after the release of Raja Harishchandra..
After a gap of eighteen years of making the country’s first film, Raja Harishchandra, a Parsee youth, Khan Bahadur Ardeshir Irani launched India’s first Talkie, Alam Ara, in 1931. And that was the beginning. 26-year-old Irani, a protégé of Phalke, made the entire India talking by making the first sound movie of the country.
Since then hundreds of Hindi films were made and the Bollywood, a term coined after Hollywood for Hindi movies made in Bombay, was born in early 1950s. The first color film, that too in Hindi, was made in 1950s.Great actors and actresses, who made marks in Hindi cinema, started arriving in that period. Along with already established Ashoke Kumar, Guru Dutt,Suraiya, Madhubala, flourished Dev Anand,Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Sunil Dutt, Jeetendra, Nutan, Nargis, Waheeda Rehman and Meena Kumari. Remarkable films including Baiju Bawra, Awara, Mother India, CID, Devdas, Arzoo, Jogan, Deedar, Sujata were produced.Outstanding music composures like O P Niar, Sachin Dev Barman and singers -- Mukesh, Talat Mehmood, Mahendra Kapoor, Mohammad Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle came out in blazing sensation.
In 1960s Rajesh Khanna, Sashi Kapoor, Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar,Shammi Kapoor, Sharmila Tagore, Asha Parekh, Saira Banu dominated the Bollywood along with the Seniors Great films like Mugla-e- Azam, Upkaar, Padosan, Jhuk Gaya Asman, Bandini, Janglee, Tumse Nahin Dekha, Teesri Manjil, Baharo Ki Sapne, Roti Kapra Aur Makan, Padosan, Sangam, Kashmir Ki Kali, An Evening in Paris were made. Powerful directors like Shakti Samanta, Hrishikesh Mukherjee made their marks. Singer Kishore Kumar enthralled the audience. Eminent music composures like Rahul Dev Barman, Kalyanji-Anandji, Shankar-Jaikishan provided unforgottable tunes to Hindi movie songs.
In the middle of 1970s appeared the all-time great Amitabh Bachchan. Dream Girl, Hema Malini also made her debut in that time. Besides, Jaya Bhaduri, Tanuja, Rishi Kapoor, Randhir Kapoor, Satrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Vibod Khanna, Vinod Mehra,Amol Palekar, Danny, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Amzad Khan, started acting. Memorable films like Sholay, Bobby, Anand, Namak Haram, Amar Akbar Antony, Deewar, Zanjeer, Guddi, Julie, Mili, Kala Pathar, Hare Krishna Hare Ram, Satranj Ke Khilari, Khamosh, Amar Prem, Abhiman, Pakeeza, Golmal Jhony Mera Naam, Seeta Aur Geeta were produced.
1970 was the time for New Wave cinema throuhout the wotld. Hindi films too were influnced by this new trend. Shyam Benegal was the pioneer director of this parallel Hindi movies. Benegal filmed Ankur, Nishant, Manthan , Bhumika and others during the period.This arts films brought forth new faces like Smita Patil, Shabana Azmi, Om Puri and Nasiruddin Shah.
In 1980s some more new actors and actresses joined the Bollywood..Of them were notables Jaya Prada, Sridevi, Madhuri Dixit, Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff, Nana Patekar, Dr Sri Ram Lagu, Anupam Kher. Notable films of the decade were Kaamchor, Sanjog, Sharabi, Mr India, Chandni, Chalbaaz, Tezaab, Saajan, Khalnayak, Umrao Jaan, Kalyug, Utsav and Izaazat. Amitabh Bachchan was still ruking the Bollywood with his super hit films like Namak Halal, Satte Pe Satta and Silsila.
A tangible change was noticed from 1990. Action movies gave place to romantic films.New Superstars were born in the forms of Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Ajay Devgan, Sunil Shetty, Karishma Kapoor, Kajol. Super Duper films like Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaenge, Zubeida, Kuch Kuch Hota Hain, Maya Memsaab, Baazigar, Darr, Dil Se, Raja Hindustani, Qayamat se Qayamat Tak, Sarfarosh, Dil Chatat Hai, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Lagan, Pyaar to Hona hi Tha, Zakham, Dil to Pagal Hai, Beta were screened. New directors like Sanjay Leela Bansali, Raj Kumar Santoshi, David Dhawan and others were the men behind the hit films.
 
Since 2000, some more Megastars appeared. They were Abhishek Bachchan, son of Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Kareena Kapoor, Rani Mukherjee. Films like Sathiyaa, Yuba, Hum Tum, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Kaoho Naa Pyaar Hai, Koi Mil Gaya, Refugee, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gam, Devdas, Black, Dhoom, Dhoom 2, Don, Krrish, Rang de Basanti, The Rising –Mangal Pandey, Munnabhai MBBS, Lage Raho Munnabhai, Hera Pheri, Phir Hera Pheri kept the movie halls houseful for months. New director Priyadarshan introduced simple laugh in his movies, all of which were super hits.
Bollywood movies are shown not only in India, but also in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Malayasia, Indonesia, Singapore, Bangkok, South Africa, Latin America, South America, the USA, the UK, and also in Australia.
